His Holiness the Dalai Lama in London May 1999

PRESS RELEASE - 30 April 1999

His Holiness the Dalai Lama arrives in London on May 7th for his 9th visit to the U.K. to an unprecedented amount of media attention for Tibet and the Tibetan cause.

With tickets for the three day teachings on the Tibetan Buddhist writings Transforming the Mind at Wembley Conference Centre as well as the public talk Ethics for the New Millennium at the Royal Albert Hall in London sold out four months in advance. Both the press and public interest in Chinese occupied Tibet and the subsequent moral and political pressure is at an all time high. All profit from the events goes directly through U.K. based charity Tibet House Trust to Tibetan refugees in exile.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama's latest book Ancient Wisdom, Modern World - Ethics for a New Millennium will be launched during the visit. In His first major publication in recent years since the best selling autobiography Freedom In Exile, the Dalai Lama calls for a revolution - not a political, an economic, a technical or even a religious revolution, but a spiritual revolution to help us through the moral maze of modern life.

His Holiness will meet the press at the Palace of Westminster at the invitation of the All Party Group for Tibet on 11 May at 10.00 am in the Jubilee Room. At the invitation of the Archbishop of Canterbury, His Holiness the Dalai Lama will deliver the 10th Lambeth Interfaith Lecture Towards a Peaceful World - the Role of Religious Communities at Lambeth Palace that evening.

His Holiness will also consecrate an eight foot statue of the Lord Buddha at Jamyang Buddhist Centre in South London and open a Tibetan Peace Garden next to the Imperial War Museum on 13th May morning. London based Tibet Foundation built the garden which symbolises the commitment to peace of the Tibetan people in their struggle for justice and freedom in Tibet.
